SafeTEA – why Rooibos Rocks when you’re expecting

The fact that Rooibos is caffeine-free is the main reason why Rooibos is the beverage of choice for you, your bump or your newborn.  A recent study of international evidence about caffeine and pregnancy conducted by the British Medical Journal found “persuasive confirmation of increased risk … for at least five major negative pregnancy outcomes: miscarriage, stillbirth, lower birth weight and/or small for gestational age, childhood acute leukemia, and childhood overweight and obesity.”

Advice on how much caffeine one can safely consume daily when pregnant is the subject of hot debate amongst scientists.  A study from Kaiser Permanente's Northern California Division of Research found that pregnant women who consumed more than 200 milligrams of caffeine daily had double the risk of miscarriage compared with those who avoided the stimulant.  Britain’s National Health Service recommends a limit of 200mg per day or less.

Black Tea, Green Tea and Oolong Tea contain about 40 to 50 milligrams per cup.  One 8oz cup of brewed coffee (8 oz) on average contains about 95 mg of caffeine. So, you don’t need many cuppas of tea or coffee to break the recommended limits.

Other ways in which Rooibos supports your wellbeing in pregnancy and beyond

There’s plenty of anecdotal evidence that drinking Rooibos Tea helps to ease digestive problems that you can experience as your bump gets bigger - it can help to prevent acid reflux, constipation, vomiting and heartburn.  It also has some beneficial effects that can help with other issues associated with pregnancy – depression, raised blood pressure, unstable blood sugar levels, skin problems and maintaining proper liver function.

Bottom line

Popular beverages, like coffee, carbonated drinks and Black Tea, Green Tea and Oolong Tea are best avoided during pregnancy or lactation because of their caffeine content.  But you can drink multiple cups of Rooibos Tea without any danger of complications because it is caffeine-free.  So why take the risk – especially when Rooibos also has all those other benefits which are especially important at this stage in your life?
